This is one of my favorite activities of the year, and by far one of the the best free activities in this town! The little kids loved it - for 10 minutes or so. After decorating their tiles, they proceeded to turn them into birthday cakes. We then quickly removed the "candles" and banished them outside:)
Cayla, our resident family potter, really looks forward to the tile-making. She also has been doing clay classes and camps for the past year, so I was looking forward to her creation. But, first she dug out a valley so deep she came out the other side. Then she started writing her sister's name and spelled it wrong, so she rubbed it off. Then she remembered the popcorn! Cayla was done:) Her tile is full of textures and lovely, of course, but probably not her happiest tile-making experience. Our friend, L, quickly followed, while K and I hoarded letter stamps that challenged our spacial awareness and happily worked on our tiles.
Collin, who normally has an attention span of a honey bee outlasted everyone. He carefully dug out a frame from the outside and then used that clay to make a huge ball he (hopefully) secured in the middle of the tile. He thought for a while what to do next and then decided to turn it into a clown (the ball was the nose). Who is the luckily recipient of this going to be?!?!?!
