French Toast Ranking

I think few people beyond parents get the privilege of listening to their kids have a conversation with each other. Generally, when someone else is around (grandparent, friend, etc.) they are part of that conversation, often asking questions and leading the conversation. Or, even more likely, my kids change how they act around other people; acting shy, acting silly, acting like complete fools . . .

Today, over a breakfast of french toast, Collin and Cayla were engaging in quite a serious discussion, oblivious to Flannery and I, who were off in other rooms. After a quick tasting they determined that Flannery's french toast was delicious, but didn't rank higher than 'medium'. Uncle Dan and Grandma clearly made superior french toast. Cayla put Uncle Dan and Grandma up at 'high', declaring them both top-of-the-top. Collin put Grandma at 'medium-high' and Dan at 'high', "...because he's a chef, you know." Cayla stood her ground, "...so, they are both good!"

They then went on to reminisce the times they have eaten at Uncle Dan's restaurants. They seem to remember things a bit different from me, but that's the advantage of being 8 and not having a pesky adult in one's conversation. They are quite excited that they will soon be able to eat at Uncle Dan's restaurants without coming in the back door. They also think that kids should be allowed in casinos when they are 10 or 11 (Collin) or 12 or 13 or 14 or 15 or 16 or 17 or 18!!!! (Cayla). Collin also declared that although he knows he can drink when he's 21, he's never drink that, "ucky, yucky, nasty stuff!!!!!" Good thing I've got it on record now:)

And, then breakfast was over and the conversation was over and they went off to play with a balloon and help Flannery cut leeks and fuss at each other and blast out a tune on the piano and I snuck off to the computer.
